5 Reasons Why I love SMITE and Why You Should too!

Alright, here's the scenario. It's the beginning of summer and you just started working a full time, 40+ hours a week job. The last thing you want to do is start a game that has a story that takes time out of your busy sleeping schedule. What's the first thing that comes to mind? Ahh, yes. Some sort of quick, round based game. So a MOBA right? Well, you suck at League of Legends and feel as if you'd get the same results trying HoN or DotA 2. That top down angle just messes with your normal first and third person accuracy. This is where Smite comes in!

Damn, that's a nice logo.
So to give you a background, Smite is a 3rd person MOBA created by Hi-Rez Studios. Their name ring any bells? It should. Hi-Rez also created the highly regarded fast-paced shooter, Tribes: Ascend and third person MMORPG, Global Agenda. Straying away from their normal futuristic sci-fi landscapes, Smite revolves around Gods, deities and other beasts from various mythologies fighting for supremacy among order and chaos! The main Conquest game play revolves around the normal MOBA set up with three lanes leading from each base with a jungle area in the middle. On the lanes there are towers to defend and destroy and in the jungle there are buff camps to steal in order to pull out your victory. Simple, right? But the game is more than just buff camps, towers and minions. There is so much more to this game than just another MOBA! I love Smite, and right now I'm going to spend some time trying to convince you as to why you should love it too!

#1 - Staggering Amount of Variety
Janus, the newest edition to the game!
Admittedly, when compared to other games in the genre, Smite is lacking on the amount of characters available. As I'm typing this, there are currently 54 Gods available to play in game. With that said, it should also be noted that HiRez is pumping out a new God every few weeks. Even though the roster of gods is a bit short right now, anyone who has ever played a MOBA styled game should know that the amount of characters doesn't make the game. It's the diversity among abilities and powers that truly brings a game to life. Smite hits the nail on the head with this. Each and every character will feel vastly different from each other. Along with themed skins and voice packs being released ever so often, Smite's diversity of playability is key to its incredible gameplay.

#2 - Innovative Gameplay

When I look at the future of MOBAs there's just one thing that I can think about that could ultimately lead to their dissolve; lack of innovation. Most MOBAs follow a similar formula. There is almost always a top down perspective with constant clicking to get your character where they need to go. While this set up is great for some, for me, I need a little more. I enjoy fast paced gameplay, and honestly can't stand the top down perspective. Smite was my answer. You would be surprised at how much 3rd person truly affects the gameplay. For me, the third person, RPG perspective is where it's at.
Everything looks beautiful!
#3 -  Outstanding Community

The MOBA community is infamous for it's vulgar and repulsive attitudes towards new players. This isn't any secret. Even when it comes to Smite, every now and again you'll come across a troll just waiting for their chance to degrade you. The difference with Smite is that as a whole, the community is incredibly friendly and responsive. I've been playing the game for more than a year now, and it's very rare that I come across a troll, but I'm constantly coming across friendly Smite citizens! Not to mention all of the outside community stuff. One of my favorite subreddits is the official Smite reddit page. Everyone there is just so friendly and helpful! I can honestly say that I'm proud to be a part of the Smite community and can't wait to see what the future holds for it!

#4 - Hi-Rez's Outreach is Phenomenal

I honestly can't give Hi-Rez enough credit with this game. While there may be a lot of controversy surrounding their past projects, their dedication to Smite and its community has been the best I've ever seen. The subreddit is always alive with developers, designers and community directors all communicating and giving feedback to the community. Not to mention the Twitch channel always has someone friendly and willing to talk to the chat. Hi-Rez has truly outdone themselves when it comes to the community.

The new and beautiful siege mode!
#5 - Game Mode Diversity is Everything I've Wanted and More

Let's say you don't like the MOBA set up. You've never been a big fan of lane set-up games. This is where you and I can relate. I've never really liked the laning set-up. It always felt too clunky and over drawn. Smite fixes this issue with Arena Mode. Arena mode is literally exactly what it sounds like. You take your favorite Gods, pit them against each other in a 5v5 all out brawl. The gameplay is incredibly exciting and amazingly fast paced with a game lasting no longer than 20-25 minutes. This is the game mode I usually play because you honestly never know what might happen next. There are a few others as well. There's Assault where you have a single lane, 5v5, and get a random God and Joust which consists of a single large lane, 3v3, and two jungle areas on either side. A few weeks ago they launched a new game mode called Siege which is a shorter, two lane version of conquest. All of the game modes are very unique in style and gameplay and gives everyone at least something to play on.

Well, there it is folks. My reasons for loving Smite. I honestly hope that you'll give the game a chance. It's honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I hope what I've said here has helped you make your decision to play the game! Now go download it and play!
